You aren’t the first to wonder and believe us, you won’t be the last. Vaping, particularly for a beginner can be seriously confusing and difficult to cut through the noise to just find a simple product that works for you based on what you want. That’s why we’re here to break everything down for you, as plain and simply as we can to ensure you choose the right product for you. What Is a Starter Kit? You probably aren’t surprised to find out that a ‘starter kit’ is exactly what it says it is. It’s a type of e-cigarette that is typically used by beginners, and often used by people from the moment they quit smoking, to the moment they quit smoking and vaping all together. Usually starter kits are small and portable, often with small pods you dispose of or pens where you refill the tank. Here are some examples. Is’s important to remember the term starter kit can be used quite loosely because some starter kits can be bulky or fairly complex to use, despite them being branded as for beginners. What Types Are There? There are typically 3 main types of starter kit used. Cigalike – This type is one of the oldest and technology has come along way since their first creation, but often they’re a good choice for the initial few weeks of vaping, just to see how you get on with vaping as opposed to smoking. Essentially, they look and feel almost exactly the same as a cigarette. Pod System – A pod system is a type of kit that has detachable pods, often with different flavour e-liquids that you can detach and replace. Most pod systems you just dispose of the pods and keep changing them to save you having to refill or buy e-liquid. This is usually the most popular type of starter kit. The reason being is the fact that pens are usually refillable, extremely portable and more reliable than an E-cigarette or pod system. Which Should I Use? Now this really is a subjective question, which requires you to assess your needs as a first-time e-cigarette user. If you want something that replicates smoking exactly, then we would recommend a Pod system because they are the most similar to real cigarettes, as is the case with a standard e-cigarette, but these do not offer much reliability. If you are looking to not have to replace your device regularly, then we would definitely recommend a pen. There are so many out there, the one you choose is really dependent on your personal taste as technically, there isn’t all that much of a difference between them, they offer similar functions. Below is a list of some considerations for a first time vaper when browsing starter kits that you might want to think about when choosing a product: Battery life and durability – Will it last your full working day or will you have to recharge multiple times? Similarity to cigarettes – Do you want something to initially just replace the urge to smoke cigarettes? Functionality – A lot of pens will have one button which is simple to use, often 3 clicks on and 3 clicks off with one click held down to inhale. Design – Which colour do you like? Portability and ergonomics – Will it fit in your pocket? Is it comfortable in your hand? Price – Cheapest isn’t always best, there is an old saying ‘you by cheap you buy twice’ and this certainly rings through in the vaping world. Disposable pods or refill? Disposable pods are great for some people but they do restrict the flavours and juices you can use whereas refillable pods or tanks enable you to choose from thousands of different flavour liquids. Which Individual Starter Kits Do We Recommend? Cigalike These are extremely similar in nature so any of them like the V3i cigalike would be suitable. Always check that the products you buy are licensed and safe, cigalike’s are exposed to the biggest threat from unlicensed manufacturers as they are so compact and lots were made before regulation restricted the sales of e-cigarettes. Pod System Juul are the leaders in the pod game currently, but the pods are disposable so you can’t refill them, you can browse them here. Aspire Cobble – One of the best Pod systems in our opinion but take a look yourself here. Blu – These can be viewed and bought here. SMOK have recently introduced the Smok Privinix 2 which is a refillable pod system. It looks and feels similar to a Juul but you can refill the pods to switch flavours on the move, check them out here. Vape Pen Our number one has to be the Aspire PockeX which is a reliable starter kit that is extremely portable, browse for yourself here. Innokin are another leading brand, especially with their Endura T18II which can be discovered here. For a slightly cheaper but still fantastic pen, we recommend the Smok Stick M17 which can be found here.
