OXVA are establishing themselves as a first rate vape brand with popular kits like the OXVA Xlim SE, but they also have a vast range of kits that sit as a happy medium between a big cloud chasing kit and a basic pod starter kit. One such kit is the OXVA Origin SE, a handheld 40W device that packs a punch.
Key Features of the OXVA Origin SE
The OXVA Origin SE is a pocket sized device, standing at just 10cm tall, 3cm wide and weighing just 60 grams (with pod installed). Powered by a 1400mAh built-in battery, the Origin offers up to 40W output which aids it’s vast vapour production. You’ll comfortably get all day vaping with this battery and recharging is fast with the type-c charging cable offering up to 80% charge in just 20 minutes. The Origin is a dual activated device which allows you to use auto-draw and button draw to vape, the same button allows you to toggle between power modes and switch the device off and on.
The OXVA Origin SE comes with a pod with a 2ml e-liquid capacity and uses the popular OXVA unicoils which have a bottom adapter to adjust airflow. The pod that comes with the kit is pre-installed with the 0.3Ohm Unicoil and you also get a 0.5Ohm unicoil in the box as a spare. These coils allow you to switch between a restricted direct-to-lung (RDTL) and a mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping style. The Origin pods are magnetic which allow the pod to be inserted to the kit effortlessly. Each pod also has a 510 drip tip which can be swapped out for any 510 connecting drip tip.
Inside the box is the OXVA Origin SE vape kit (thank god), a user manual which includes the warranty information, a type-c USB charger, a lanyard and a spare coil. It’s worth noting that the coil, lanyard and charger are located under the kit when you first open the box. To find them simply lift the kit out of the box and you’ll find the goodies laying underneath.
How to install the OXVA Origin coils?
One coil comes pre-installed in the Origin pod, it will have a cellophane cover on it that needs to be peeled off to use the device.
Changing coil instructions
Take out the old coil.
Prime your new coil (either put a few drops of liquid in the top of the coil or leave the coil to sit in the pod for 15 minutes to absorb liquid before you vape)
Insert the coil by pushing it inside the underside of the pod until you feel a little click.
Adjust airflow accordingly (OXVA recommend ensuring the airflow is facing the taller end of the kit which is the opposite side of the button)
How to refill the OXVA Origin
Refilling is simple thanks to a side filling device on the side of the pod.
Undo the rubber plug on the side of the device
Insert liquid nozzle into the hole
Begin squeezing liquid as desired, be sure to keep checking how much liquid you are putting in to avoid overfilling
Close the plug ensuring it is secured and no liquid residue remains. If any liquid remains, simply wipe this away with a piece of kitchen roll
OXVA Origin SE Build Quality, Design and Battery Life
Battery Life
The Origin SE has a built-in 1400mAh battery and is capable of up to 40W, this would usually mean that battery life is fairly diminished compared to most pod kits that often have around 900mAh batteries but only fire up to 25W. Therefore I expected the battery life to be average at best, but I was very wrong. I was comfortably vaping at 40W for a day and didn’t need to recharge, with the kit showing no sign of diminishing flavour or vapour production.
As always with vape kits and built-in batteries, the battery life is dependent on your usage. If you are vaping every 15 to 20 minutes at this wattage, I very much doubt you’ll get a full day vaping. However, for moderate users the battery life is more than sufficient on the Origin.
Design
With a metal look but plastic casing, the OXVA has a nice finish which gives it a slick look. It has engraved lines on the back of the kit which add to it’s aesthetic but possibly designed to give you more grip in the hand. You’ll find the OXVA branding neatly placed on the side of the kit which is a nice touch. The best part of the Origin design though has to be how ergonomic it is. It is extremely comfortably in the hand and fits so well in your hand no matter how you hold it. The button on the front is fairly basic but it does the job and the LED lights on the front of the kit are discreet enough so as to not annoy you when vaping.
Build Quality
I have to say I’m a little disappointed with the build quality of the OXVA Origin SE considering how lightweight but solid feeling the OXVA Xlim is. The Origin has a little bit of a cheap feel to it and it just feels a little plastic’y. With this said, the weight is strong and I’d put that down to the battery, so it doesn’t feel lightweight or like it’ll blow over on your desk, but it’s certainly not expensive feeling. The button follows this theme, it doesn’t feel luxury or particularly well thought out but it definitely does the job and there is no movement on the button like you get with most vape kits.
The pod is built quite well, it has a PCTG material like most vape pods but it has a magnetic design which I prefer 100% of the time. The magnetic feel gives it a feeling of quality and just makes it so much easier to pop the pod in and out. Although there is an airflow adjustment that is joined to the coil, I would have liked to have seen an airflow adjustment on the outside of the kit. The drip tip is comfortable enough, it’s a classic 510 drip tip so there isn’t much to be said there if you’ve ever used one.
Overall though, the build quality is not bad. It could be better but it could be so much worse.
Flavour Test
The Origin SE offers both draw and button activation giving you the choice on how you vape. The first thing to note is that when testing we didn’t find any difference between the two when it came to flavour, but you do get a bit more vapour production as a result of button activation. We tested the Origin SE with both free base nicotine and nic salt e-liquid. Both liquids produced fantastic flavour and that’s probably down to the OXVA Unicoils. It’s no secret that the unicoils are some of the best in the business and the Origin SE doesn’t disappoint.
Who is the OXVA Origin SE for?
Whilst it is a small pod device, the OXVA Origin is most definitely not a starter kit. It is somewhere between a starter pod kit like the OXVA Xlim and a high end kit like a Geekvape Aegis Boost. It has a simple design and simple functionality, but is capable of producing large amounts of vapour. We would recommend this device for somebody who is ready to make the next step from a basic pod kit, to something a little more durable with greater vapour production to see how they like it.
Pro’s and Con’s
Pro’s
Lightweight and portable
Good battery life
Fast recharge
Simple to use
Large vapour production
Con’s
No external adjustable airflow
Summary…
Overall, the OXVA Origin SE is a fantastic little device. Sure it has some minor bug bears like the lack of external adjustable airflow and the slightly cheap feeling finish, but that doesn’t take away from it’s flavour production and ease of use which are arguably the most important factors to any vape kit. The unicoils once again produce excellent flavour and with the 40W setting you really do feel like you’re vaping a kit that is much bigger. This device isn’t for complete beginners but does act as a perfect step up from a run of the mill basic device. OXVA once again have done a really good job at not over complicating a device, giving the people what they want without the hassle of 400 settings and buttons to confuse things, which is what we love.
