5 or so years ago, if you wanted to quit smoking, you had one of three options:
Cigalike vapes (the kind that the NHS prescribe that look like a cigarette)
Huge vape mods
Nicotine replacement (patches, gum etc)
Then came disposable vapes which made the switch from smoking to vaping much more attractive due to the diverse flavour ranges available in high nicotine strengths, in a completely hassle free form. And now here we are in 2024, with the widest range of refillable vape kits ever that don’t require a degree in engineering to operate like those huge vape box mods.
The vape market has become more accessible, but people still seem to be stuck on disposables even though they’re not the most cost effective choice for long term vaping. Maybe people find the refillable vape market quite daunting, and who wouldn’t? There are 100’s of options available, and you now have to contend with liquids, replacement pods etc instead of just opening a packet and being able to vape instantly.
We’re here to show you that actually, it isn’t that complicated, and you can save a lot of money if you switch over to a refillable vape kit rather than continuing to use disposables.
Pair your new kit with a disposable vape flavoured e-liquid for a vaping experience closest to disposables but at a fraction of the cost.
Vaporesso are one of the leaders in the vaping industry, and are the brand we recommend time and time again for those looking for a straightforward and good vape kit. They released their Xros Mini 4 a couple of months ago following the successful release of the Xros Mini 3 in 2022, and we’re seriously impressed with the overall quality of the kit and ease of use. We have a full review of this kit here if you’d like to see how it performs in more detail.
The Xros mini 4 is the perfect starter kit for those looking to transition away from disposables; it’s got no buttons, draw-activation, and an adjustable airflow, and delivers excelled flavour using Vaporesso’s new Xros Corex pods. These 2ml pods are also anti leak and will provide excellent flavour for 20 days or more based on usage! The Mini 4 has a 1000mAh battery which can comfortably provide all day vaping – and a little extra – with rapid type-c recharging when required.
If you’re after a hassle free, great vape with excellent flavour pay off, then the Xros Mini 4 might just be the kit for you.
Easy To Use, Yet Completely Tailored And Adjustable Vaping
The Oxva Xlim Pro 2 is another new release by a vape giant, this time by OXVA. The Original Oxva Xlim Pro has been one of our best sellers since it launched, and is another pod kit that we’ll always recommend for those of you looking for a kit that best replicates the flavours of disposables.
The Xlim Pro 2 has an upgraded 13000mAh battery, 300mAh more than the original Xlim Pro, which means that one full charge should last you 30% longer. When it does come time to recharge the kit, using the rapid type-c charging the percentage can go from 0-80% in just 25 minutes.
The Xlim Pro 2 also features an upgraded and revamped screen, which displays the battery percentage, wattage, resistance of the coil, and the puff count. It also has a light bar at the bottom of the screen which indicates battery life. The wattage can be adjusted anywhere between 5W to 30W, and paired with the adjustable airflow you can tailor the kit to have more of an RDTL (Restricted-Direct-To-Lung), or MTL (Mouth-To-Lung) draw. The wattage will also auto adjust depending on the resistance of your coil to provide the optimum power, so you don’t have to adjust the wattage if this isn’t something that you’re particularly interested in.
This kit is bulkier and more techy that the Xros Mini 4, so if you’re looking for something a bit more jazzy with good flavour payoff and an adjustable wattage, then the OXVA Xlim Pro 2 is for you.
Huge Battery, DTL, RDTL, MTL, Sub-Ohm Vaping, Large Cloud Production Capabilities
The Vaporesso Luxe XR max is the perfect kit for those of you that want a robust and tech driven kit with sub-ohm capabilities that’s still considerably easier to operate than a box mod. Using the compatible pods and coils available for this kit, you can choose a resistance ranging between 0.15Ohms and 1.2Ohms. If you want a true sub ohm vape, then you can use the Vaporesso GTX coils along with the Luxe XR empty pods (DTL), or if you’d prefer an MTL vape, you can use the same coil range in a higher resistance and the same pods (select the MTL version rather than DTL). There are also pods with pre fitted coils available ranging from 0.4Ohms to 0.8Ohms for a more standard RDTL and MTL vape. Pair this with the adjustable airflow and wattage (between 5-80W), and you can achieve any variation of vaping you’d like.
The battery of the Luxe XR max comes in at a whopping 2800mAh, the current largest on the market for a pod kit! You can monitor the battery levels at all time on the 0.54″ OLED display screen which will also display the wattage and puff count.
The Luxe XR max also has a smart touch buttons – give it 1 tap to confirm, 3 taps to adjust the wattage and power, and 4 taps to enter the main menu settings.
If you’re a fan of a techy sub-ohm vape, and you’re not too fussed about nicotine content, then the XR max might be the perfect pod vape kit for you!
If you like the sound of this fancy kit, and you’re intrigued to discover that there is a different style of vaping aside from the traditional 20mg nicotine, feels-like-a-cigarette vape, we’ll get you up to speed.
Sub ohm vaping is mainly defined by 4 factors that all work together:
Low Coil Resistance – Technically, any coil resistance that’s under 1.0ohms is classed as sub ohm – but this isn’t practical for a true sub ohm vape, as the high VG liquids that work for sub ohm vaping would completely fry a 1.0Ohms coil due to the thickness. For best compatibility with the high VG liquids required to get the high cloud production, you’ll need a coil that’s 0.6ohms and below. The lower you go, the hotter the coil heats up, and the more clouds and vapour are produced. You’ll also find the lower you go the more intense the flavour is. The only negative with using coils at such as low resistance is that you’ll go through liquids very quickly. In summary, lower coil resistance is often better for a sub ohm vape.
Loose Airflow – If you have your airflow all the way open, it will enhance your Sub ohm vape as it allows the air to pass directly to your lungs to maximise cloud production. This is what’s known as DTL (Direct To Lung) vaping. If you have your airflow closed halfway, this would be an RDTL vape (Restricted direct to lung) as it will still bypass straight to your lungs but you’ll feel slightly more resistance when you take a drag. For a true sub-ohm vape, have the airflow open at least halfway or more.
Low Nicotine – The reason you’ll find that Sub-Ohm vapers have a lower nicotine level in their juices, is because the VG/PG ratio in vape liquids needed for a sub-ohm vape, is at least 70VG/30PG (the VG is the thickness of the liquid and what makes the kit produce large clouds). Shortfills are pretty much the only liquids that consistently have a 70VG/30PG ratio, and come as standard with 0 nicotine (you can’t have 50ml or 100ml of liquid with nicotine in because this is non TPD compliant and illegal for sale within the UK), and so to mix in the nicotine shots you’ll only ever achieve a very low dose of nicotine because of the dilution. So it’s not necessarily by choice, as the high nicotine nic salts are usually 50VG/50PG, and are much too thin to use in a sub ohm coil resistance.
High VG Liquids – Already covered in the point just above, high VG liquids produce the best clouds and the best flavour, so are the go to for a DTL sub-ohm vaper.
The end result of a sub ohm vape is big clouds (high vapour production), low nicotine intake with maximum flavour.
Easy To Use, Changeable Vaping Modes, Sleek Design
The Voopoo Vmate Max pod kit is another straightforward pod vape kit offering high performance vaping, but this time with different vaping modes to benefit from. There are 3 modes you can use:
SPT Mode: Boosts the flavour output of the kit resulting in a full bodied and rich flavour.
NOR Mode: Automatically optimises the wattage output to the best wattage for the pod you’ve chosen.
ECO Mode: Reduces power output to preserve the battery life and e-liquid consumption for a prolonged vaping session.
You can also set the kit to ‘power mode’ to adjust the wattage as you please.
The Vmate Max has a 1200mAh battery built in for up to 3 days of vaping without the need to recharge. This will depend on your vaping style, so if you’re using it like a dummy the battery will last for less than 3 days. It can go up to 30W with the wattage being fully adjustable, and this kit is ideal for an MTL (Mouth To Lung), high nicotine vaping session. You also have RGB light bars and a hidden horizon screen for a high tech looking vape.
You have a choice of Vmate 2ml and Vmate XL pods to use with this kit which offer a brilliant flavour output, and are also leak resistant.
If you’re looking for a kit that’s practical and easy to use, but looks high-tech and has customisable modes available, then the Voopoo Vmate Max might be the one for you!
The Oxva Xlim SQ Pro is another kit by the creators of the Xlim Pro 2, OXVA. This one has a funky design and uses the same V3 pods that all other Xlim range kits use. It’s much more compact compared to the other kits on our list, coming in a pocket friendly cube like shape. It still manages to house a 1200mAh battery, giving you up to 3 days of vaping depending on your usage. The screen on the front of the kit is 0.96″ and has a full colour display showing you the battery and power levels, temperature, and puff count. You can also fully customise your home screen background with different pre set themes, something you can’t do with any other kits on our list! There is an easy to navigate menu with multiple modes available such as power for adjustable wattage, and smart for auto adjusting wattage based on the resistance of your pod.
The Xlim SQ Pro is compatible with MTL and RDTL vaping, with the compatible V3 pods coming in 0.6ohms, 0.8ohms, and 1.2ohms. You also have a side adjustable airflow to refine your MTL or RDTL vape.
If you’re after a discreet, portable, easy to use kit, the OXVA Xlim SQ Pro might be the one for you!
We hope that we showed you that vape kits aren’t actually all for advanced vapers, and that a lot of them are fine for complete beginners to use.
