Vaping batteries come in many forms, shapes and sizes. They are integral to your vaping experience and responsible for powering your device. At vape.co.uk we understand that all this battery jargon, mAh, 18650, voltage, capacity – it can all be so confusing. We’ve wrote this blog to help clear up some common questions.
Internal vs External Vape Batteries
All vape kits will either have internal or external vape batteries and the type you have will depend on the kit you buy. An internal battery simply means you don’t have to replace or use batteries on their own whereas an external battery has to be bought separately and placed into your vape kit. We recommend always checking the product description when buying a kit as kits with external batteries usually won’t come with the battery included. The reason for this is safety, it wouldn’t be safe to transport vape kits with 18650 or any other size battery cross country. Both internal and external batteries have their pro’s and con’s.
Pros and Cons of Internal and External Vape Batteries
Benefits of an External Vape Battery
Give you freedom to choose which battery type you want to use
Usually longer battery life
Drawbacks of an External Vape Battery
More expensive than internal batteries
Safety – you must be careful with how you store, assemble and charge external batteries
Benefits of an Internal Vape Battery
Cheaper than external batteries as they’re already included
Less hassle to replace batteries
Drawbacks of an Internal Vape Battery
If a battery doesn’t work properly, you usually have to replace the whole mod rather than just the battery
More likely to fail than an external battery
Vape Battery Size
There are many different types of battery and we will discuss the different types, but the most important thing to consider is battery size. The most common size of vape battery is the 18650 battery. Some kits use a single 18650 battery and others might use a dual 18650 battery. Whilst historically vape kits used all different sizes of battery, the 18650 is considered the industry standard and most kits are compatible with it. You might also find 21700 batteries that are quite common in vaping, but far less so than the 18650.
The size simply refers to the diameter and length of the battery 18 (mm in diameter) and 65 (mm in length).
Can I use any lithium Ion battery with my vape kit?
In short, no. Vaping batteries have been designed with the use of a vape kit and there are a few brands that specialise in this. You can buy many non brand and non vaping specific batteries that will work in your vape kit but most definitely should be. Batteries that aren’t explicitly made for vape kits have not been sufficiently tested and come with the real risk of a fire hazard or explosion. Two brands that are popular amongst vapers and are approved to be used with vape kits are Molicell and Golisi.
What does mAh mean?
mAh refers to the capacity of storage a battery has. It stands for “milliampere hour”. The level of mAh really tells you how long a battery will last. Typically, a battery with a higher mAh will last longer. However, if only life were this simple. There are an array of factors to consider when looking at battery life. Like your phone battery, the more you use it and the way in which you use it, will effect how long a battery lasts.
Battery Safety
Safety is THE most important thing to consider when assessing which vape battery you should buy or use. It is important to remember that batteries used for vaping are Lithium Ion batteries that must be stored and charged correctly to ensure their safe use.
As a rule of thumb please NEVER use a battery that is damaged or ripped at all.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Battery Safety
Do
Get a smart charger
Use a reputable vape kit
Stop charging when charging is complete
Clean battery terminals if they are dirty (not with water)
Turn the battery off if it gets wet
Conduct research on the kit and the battery, is it compatible for vape kits?
Use the correct charging cable, either the one that came with your kit or with your battery charger
