IQOS Iluma Heated Tobacco Device

No Flame, Just Heat

The key difference with the IQOS Iluma is that it heats tobacco instead of burning it. That may sound like a small change, but its actually massive. Traditional cigarettes rely on combustion, resulting in burning the tobacco at around 800 degrees, which provides smoke, ash, and a whole cocktail of harmful chemicals.

The IQOS Iluma, on the other hand, uses induction heating. That means it warms the tobacco to a much lower temperature at around 300-350 degrees, releasing a nicotine vapour, not smoke. This makes it much cleaner and less smelly, and doesn’t fill your room or clothes with that burnt tobacco smell.

What’s Going On Inside

The Iluma doesn’t have a blade inside like the older IQOS devices did. Instead it uses a Smartcore Induction System. You insert a specially designed TEREA stick into the holder. These sticks have real tobacco in them but different to cigarettes.

Inside each TEREA stick is a tiny metal element. When you insert it into the holder, the device creates a magnetic field that induces heat directly into that metal core. That heat spreads out and gently warms the tobacco from the inside, without ever actually burning it. Iluma keeps it clean and contactless, this also means there’s no need to clean any gunky residue off your device.

No Mess, No Cleaning

Because the tobacco never touches a heating blade, and the heating is all internal via induction, you don’t get the same sticky tar like mess that older heat not burn devices or vapes can leave behind. You never need to clean the Iluma. That alone makes it a huge improvement in day to day use.

How Do I Use The IQOS Iluma?

Firstly take out the IQOS Iluma out of the packaging and read the user manual before use.

1. Make sure your device is fully charged. The IQOS Iluma comes with a holder and a charging case. Pop the holder into the case and charge it, they both need to be powered up to work properly.
2. The ILUMA only works with TEREA sticks (not the older HEETS). Slide one into the holder until it stops, make sure you don’t twist simply just slide it in.
3. Once the stick is in, a vibration will indicate the heating process has started. However you can press and hold the button for a manual start. You’ll see that it’s heating up by a pulsing light.
4. In a few seconds, it will vibrate again and the light will stay solid, that’s your signal its ready to use.
5. Once it’s ready, take slow, steady puffs. The session lasts around 5–6 minutes or approx. 14 puffs. You’ll feel another vibration near the end to let you know it’s almost done.
6. When the session is over, gently pull out the TEREA stick and toss it. No need to clean anything, since there’s no blade, the Iluma doesn’t get messy like older models.
7. Put the holder back in the charging case so it’s ready for next time. The LED lights will show you how much charge is left.

What Is A Heating Blade?

A heating blade is a small, thin metal or ceramic element used to heat something up, usually by getting really hot when electricity passes through it. The heating blade is the part that goes inside the tobacco stick to heat the tobacco from the inside out, without actually burning it.

However the newer IQOS models like the Iluma have moved away from using a heating blade altogether. They now use induction heating, which works differently and doesn’t require a blade, so there’s less chance of breakage and no need for deep cleaning.

How Much Nicotine Does One TEREA Stick Have In It?
